The 10 Most Popular Diets of 2019

Google recently released multiple lists of some of the most searched for topics of 2019 and broke those down into the most searched terms for that particular topic.

When it came to most searched for diets we were pretty surprised by the results and honestly have never even heard of half of them.

Below is every diet in the top 10 explained by relevant experts.

Comment below if you have never heard of some of these diets or if you have actually followed one of them yourself.

Intermittent Fasting Diet

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesn’t specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them. In this respect, it’s not a diet in the conventional sense but more accurately described as an eating pattern.”

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/intermittent-fasting-guide

These are the most popular methods:

  • The 16/8 method: Also called the Leangains protocol, it involves skipping breakfast and restricting your daily eating period to 8 hours, such as 1–9 p.m. Then you fast for 16 hours in between.
  • Eat-Stop-Eat: This involves fasting for 24 hours, once or twice a week, for example by not eating from dinner one day until dinner the next day.
  • The 5:2 diet: With this method you consume only 500–600 calories on two non-consecutive days of the week, but eat normally the other 5 days.

By reducing your calorie intake, all of these methods should cause weight loss as long as you don’t compensate by eating much more during the eating periods.

Many people find the 16/8 method to be the simplest, most sustainable and easiest to stick to. It’s also the most popular.

Dr. Sebi Diet

First of all who is Dr. Sebi? Alfredo Darrington Bowman, better known as Dr. Sebi.

“Born in Honduras in 1933, Sebi immigrated to the United States where it is said he was unsuccessfully treated for his asthma, diabetes, obesity, and impotency. An herbalist in Mexico allegedly managed to heal Sebi, which led him to create his own herbal mixtures which he sold under the name “Dr. Sebi’s Cell Food”.

He was sued in 1987 for practicing medicine without a license, but was acquitted when the state could not prove he had given medical diagnoses. He was then successfully sued by the State of New York for consumer fraud, and Sebi had to pay 900$ and refrain from making disease-specific claims.

He was later accused in Honduras of money laundering and imprisoned until his death in 2016 from pneumonia.”

Since Dr. Sebi believed the secret to preventing and curing diseases was to control the acid in your body by alkalizing your diet, the diet consists of only a handful of foods and many supplements.

According to Dr. Sebi’s nutritional guide, you must follow these key rules:

  • Rule 1. You must only eat foods listed in the nutritional guide.
  • Rule 2. Drink 1 gallon (3.8 liters) of water every day.
  • Rule 3. Take Dr. Sebi’s supplements an hour before medications.
  • Rule 4. No animal products are permitted.
  • Rule 5. No alcohol is allowed.
  • Rule 6. Avoid wheat products and only consume the “natural-growing grains” listed in the guide.
  • Rule 7. Avoid using a microwave to prevent killing your food.
  • Rule 8. Avoid canned or seedless fruits.

A couple things to keep in mind as well is that with this diet you are expected to buy Dr. Sebi’s products and this diet is also very low in protein.

Noom Diet

Targeted at millennials, Noom is a health app designed by behavioral psychologists to help you lose weight for the long run. It focuses on making tangible, sustainable lifestyle shifts rather than encouraging more extreme styles of eating (e.g., cutting out specific food groups or nutrients). The app, which costs a minimum of $45 per month, allows you to:

  • Generate a personalized calorie breakdown based on a series of lifestyle questions
  • Track the foods you eat by searching a database or scanning barcodes
  • Log exercise, weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar
  • Receive in-app 1:1 health coaching during business hours
  • Stay motivated with interactive articles and quizzes

Since it was developed by psych docs, the ideology behind the coaching and content is designed to “‘trick’ your body into building healthy habits, faster,” Noom states. – Goodhousekeeping.com

1200 Calories Diet

This one is pretty straight forward and needs little explanation. Simply consume only 1200 calories per day while focusing on healthy food choices and you should have no problem losing weight.

The average person is expected to lose 1-2 pounds per week.

Golo Diet

According to the company, the GOLO Diet was created by doctors, pharmacists, and nutritionists after doing “extensive research.” The brand positions itself as a refreshing alternative to the traditional commercial diet industry, because it says that you don’t have to rely on calorie counting or diet foods to create weight loss. The company says it has helped over one million people successfully lose weight.

GOLO for Life claims to help you lose weight through insulin management. Customers invest in a 30-, 60-, or 90-day GOLO Rescue Program that promises to help restore hormonal balance and repair metabolism.

The GOLO website doesn’t provide a lot of information about the eating plan. But if you look at the research provided and conducted by the company, you’ll find details about what you will have to do.

  1. Reduce calories. You can expect to eat between 1300 and 1800 calories per day. Restaurant dining is allowed as long as you follow the eating guidelines. Home meal prep guidance (in the booklets) and online recipes are provided. As part of the calorie-restricted eating plan, users are also expected to practice portion control.
  2. Exercise. In the research, participants were directed to participate in 15 minutes of exercise per day or 105 minutes per week and to “preferably exercise using high-intensity workouts (HIT).”
  3. Take the GOLO Release supplement. The supplement is the cornerstone of the diet and, according to the company, is what makes the program different than others on the market.

The main ingredients in the “release supplement” include Magnesium, Zinc, and Chromium.

Dubrow Diet

From Healthline:

The Dubrow Diet is a popular diet plan created by reality stars Terry and Heather Dubrow.

Dr. Terry Dubrow is a well-known plastic surgeon and co-host of the TV show Botched, while Heather Dubrow is a former cast member of the Real Housewives of Orange County.

The diet is outlined in a book that was published in 2018.

According to its creators, the plan can improve blood sugar control, increase energy levels, boost fat-burning, and slow signs of aging.

The diet runs in two phases.

The first phase has you follow the 16/8 intermittent fasting schedule earlier discussed and the second phase has you eat these certain amounts of foods daily:

  • 2–3 servings of non-starchy vegetables
  • 2–3 servings of lean protein
  • 2–3 servings of healthy fats
  • 1 serving of dairy
  • 1–2 servings of fruit
  • 1 serving of nuts or seeds
  • 1 serving of complex carbs

Sirtfood Diet

The sirtfood diet got popular mainly in part to Adele crediting it to her recent weight loss and stayed popular due to its promises of constant red wine and dark chocolate.

From Marieclaire:

The Sirtfood Diet plan focuses on upping your intake of healthy sirtfoods. These include the following: apples, citrus fruits, parsley, capers, blueberries, green tea, soy, strawberries, tumeric, olive oil, red onion, rocket and that old health-lover’s favourite kale.

Interestingly, another top sirtfood is coffee, which is welcome news if you’re fed up of being told to cut out caffeine. Countries where people already consume a vast number of sirtfoods include Japan and Italy, which are both regularly ranked among the world’s healthiest countries.

For the first week you restrict your intake to 1000 calories a day, which includes consuming three sirtfood green juices and one sirtfood rich meal a day.

The following week you up your intake to 1500 calories a day and consume two sirtfood-rich meals and two green juices. But in the long-term there is no set plan, it’s all about adjusting your lifestyle to include as many sirtfoods as possible, which should make you feel healthier and more energetic.

No Carbs No Sugar Diet

Although this one should also be called the “no fun diet” it is also pretty self explanatory and is very similar to the Keto diet.

Eliminating sugar is a lot easier to do than eliminating carbs and getting rid of all carbs may actually be detrimental in the long run.

From Healthline:

There is no strict rubric for a no-carb diet. Some people who follow it eat nuts and seeds, non-starchy vegetables, and high-fat fruits like avocado and coconut.

Even though these foods have some carbs, they’re high in fiber. Therefore, they have only a minuscule number of digestible or net carbs, which is calculated by subtracting the amount of fiber from the total number of carbs (1).

A no-carb diet resembles a ketogenic diet, which limits your carb intake to fewer than 30 grams per day and encourages you to get 70% or more of your daily calories from fat.

Depending on what you choose to eat, a no-carb diet can be more restrictive than keto.

Endomorph Diet

The endomorph diet is customized towards those with a natural endomorph body type, which is naturally higher in body fat with less muscle mass.

Because of their physical makeup, people with endomorphic bodies are more sensitive to calorie consumption than people with other body types. Endomorphs must carefully watch their food intake to ensure they don’t consume more calories than they burn. Other characteristics include a larger frame and an inability to drop weight.

The endomorph diet is actually pretty simple and follows the basic rule of all diets – eat less calories in order to lose weight.

Since endomorphs naturally have slower metabolisms it is recommended that they avoid eating too many carbs or bad fats as they have a higher chance of turning to body fat.

JLO Diet

The inspiration for searching for this diet of course comes from the popular entertainer Jennifer Lopez, who recently touted her lean figure at the Super Bowl halftime show, at the age of 50 years old.

According to Goodhousekeeping.com JLO’s daily meal plan looks something like this:

Breakfast

Jennifer often kicks off her day with a shake, she told People. Her go-to smoothie includes berries, Greek yogurt, cinnamon, honey, ice cubes, a squirt of fresh lemon juice, and a scoop of protein powder.

She’ll also eat oatmeal with fresh berries, her trainer Dodd Romero told Us Weekly, but J.Lo usually skips coffee unless it’s decaf.

Lunch

For lunch, Jennifer will opt for a veggie-filled salad, like with kale, toasted pumpkin seeds, crumbled queso, minced shallots, and a dressing made with lemon juice and extra-virgin olive oil, according to People. She’ll also whip up a salad with salmon, broccoli, peppers, zucchini, and a drizzle of vinaigrette.

In general, she “stays away from processed foods and gets her nutrients from whole sources,” Romero told Us Weekly.

Dinner

Her dinner usually consists of a lean protein with more veggies and complex carbs like brown rice, sweet potatoes, or quinoa.

Although all of these diets differ in their exact protocols they all share one simple recipe for weight loss, maintaining a caloric deficit.

As long as you are exercising hard and often while eating low amounts of quality foods you will lose weight.
