2020 Crossfit Games Complete Programming Analysis

In this article we take a look at all 12 of the Crossfit Games finals events and break them down accordingly by:

  • Modality (Gymnastics GYM, weightlifting WL, mono-structural MS)
  • Time Cap
  • Workout Type (max lift, single, couplet, triplet, chipper)
  • Heavy or light weight

Monostructural refers to metabolic conditioning activities or “cardio” like Running, Rowing, and Jumping Rope.

At the end we will add everything together and determine which movements, modalities, and time frames were most prevalent at this year’s Crossfit Games.

You will see just how different the events at the Crossfit Games are compared to the Open which is predominantly for reps and gymnastics intensive. (Link to that article at bottom of page)

*We only record the movement once, so if there are 5 rounds of bar muscle ups we only record the muscle ups once, because we are listing all movements involved and number of rounds don’t change the movement.

When it came to the types of movements incorporated the programming was perfectly split between all 3 modalities.

Time to Complete

For these times we used the slowest finisher in each event as the time to complete.

  • Events under 5:00 = 4 total
  • Events from 10:00 – 20:00 = 4 total
  • Events over 1 hour = 2 events

We did not include the Crossfit Total or Snatch Speed Ladder as a lot of rest was included.

Number of Movements

  • Single = 3 total
  • Couplet = 4 total
  • Triplet = 1 total
  • Chipper = 2 total
  • Max lift = 2 total

For Time vs For Reps (Ex: AMRAP)

  • Events for time: 11 total

Every single event at the Crossfit Games was for time and not for rounds or reps as is often included in the Crossfit Open or daily WODs. Crossfit Total not included.


This year’s Crossfit Games incorporated a lot of running (5 of 12 events) but this was likely due to the location at the ranch.

The programming was overall pretty well rounded, but one thing we would like to point out is that 33% of all events were finished in less than 5 minutes. Many Crossfit athletes do not like doing workouts like this because they believe they did “not get a good enough workout”, when in fact the short workouts are just as important as the longer ones.
