2020 Crossfit Open Programming Analysis + Breakdown

And just like that the 2020 Crossfit Open has come to an end. As it was the second Open in 2019 we were not sure what to expect and we were still surprised with some of what we saw, and didn’t see.

After every competition we like to take a look at the programmed workouts and see any trends that may have emerged or any changes that could become trends.

The 2020 Open had its fair share of changes:

  • This was the first time that thrusters were not programmed for the last week of the Open.
  • This was the first time ever that chest to bar pull-ups were not programmed in the Open.
  • This was the first time athletes got to break up a workout’s rep scheme any way they wanted (20.5).
  • 2 new movements were added – the db thruster and pistol squats.
  • There has not been heavy snatches in an Open workout since 2017 (17.3)

Now let’s take a look at each workout individually with a full recap at the bottom.

20.1

10 rounds for time of:
8 ground-to-overheads, 95 lb.

  • 1 Weightlifting movement
  • Triplet
  • 240 total reps
  • Completed for fastest time

FUN FACT: 20.4 and 20.5 both had 240 total reps to complete.


TOTAL

  • 5 total Weightlifting movements
  • 7 total Gymnastics movements
  • 2 total Metabolic Conditioning movements
  • 1 couplet, 2 triplets, 2 chippers
  • 4 workouts completed for time, 1 completed for reps
  • 2 heavy workouts (over 185/135)

One thing that we would like to throw in is that we believe Dave Castro’s hint for 20.5 was the first time one of his hints actually made sense.

Dave Castro first posted this and we still weren’t quite sure what to make of it…

But when we saw this shirt we knew right away that the community was going to have some sort of choice for 20.5.

Because of his shirt showing “Forky” trying to decided between two things, our best guess was that the workout was going to allow us to choose which type of muscle up we wanted to perform, ring or bar.

Ultimately we ended up being able to choose how we partition the workout which was pretty cool as well.

Now we are on to Sanctionals season which starts November 22nd in Ireland for Crossfit Filthy 150.
