2021 Crossfit Games Programming Analysis

Dave Castro puts a lot of time in to perfecting his art of programming and he actually does a very great job at testing all aspects of fitness, whether most realize it or not.

For example at the 2020 Games in Aromas there were exactly 9 weightlifting components, 9 mono-structural components, and 9 gymnastics components.

As for 2021 the programming was once again very solid, and although many people were upset about the cuts there were 9 events completed before the first cut was made.

In this article we take a look at all 15 of the Crossfit Games finals events and break them down accordingly by:

  • Modality (Gymnastics GYM, weightlifting WL, mono-structural MS)
  • Time Cap
  • Workout Type (max lift, single, couplet, triplet, chipper)

FINAL STATS

MODALITY

  • Weightlifting: 15 (43%)
  • Gymnastics: 11 (31%)
  • Monostructural: 9 (26%)

It seems that this year there was a much higher emphasis on weightlifting over any other factor. It pays to be strong.


TIME

  • Under 5:00 – 2 (13%)
  • Under 10:00 – 5 (33%)
  • Under 20:00 – 5 (33%)
  • Over 20:00 – 1 (6%)
  • Over 1 hour – 1 (6%)
  • Max lift (no time)

If you combine all workouts under 10:00 that would equal 46% of all workouts, almost half.


EVENT TYPES

  • Singlet: 3 (20%)
  • Couplet: 7 (47%)
  • Triplet: 3 (20%)
  • Chipper: 2 (13%)

Almost half of all workouts were couplets, which also happens to be the most popular during Open workouts as well.
