Crossfit Open 20.4 vs 20.3: Which Was Actually Heavier?

For those of us in the Crossfit world that love a heavy barbell we have been spoiled the last couple of weeks with the deadlifts in 20.3 and the clean and jerks in 20.4

Both workouts for the men ended at 315 pounds and both ended at 205 for the women, but one workout was actually much heavier than the other when it came to down to total weight lifted.

Let’s get down to the numbers (BELOW)

For time: 9:00 CAP
21 deadlifts, 225/155 lb.
21 handstand push-ups
15 deadlifts, 225/155 lb.

For the men:

  • 225lb deadlifts x 45 reps = 10,125 lbs.
  • 315lb deadlifts x 45 reps = 14,175 lbs.
  • TOTAL: 24,300 lbs.

For the women:

  • 155lb deadlifts x 45 reps = 6,975 lbs.
  • 205lb deadlifts x 45 reps = 9,225 lbs.
  • TOTAL: 16,200 lbs.

30 box jumps, 24/20 in.
15 clean and jerks, 95/65 lb.
30 box jumps, 24/20 in.
15 clean and jerks, 135/85 lb.
30 box jumps, 24/20 in.

10 clean and jerks, 225/145 lb.

For the men:

  • 95lb clean and jerks x 15 reps = 1,425lbs.
  • 135lb clean and jerks x 15 reps = 2,025lbs.
  • 185lb clean and jerks x 10 reps = 1,850lbs.
  • 225lb clean and jerks x 10 reps = 2,250lbs.
  • 275lb clean and jerks x 5 reps = 1,375lbs.
  • 315lb clean and jerks x 5 reps = 1,575lbs.
  • TOTAL: 10,500lbs.

For the women:

  • 65lb clean and jerks x 15 reps = 975lbs.
  • 85lb clean and jerks x 15 reps = 1,275lbs.
  • 115lb clean and jerks x 10 reps = 1,150lbs.
  • 145lb clean and jerks x 10 reps = 1,450lbs.
  • 175lb clean and jerks x 5 reps = 875lbs.
  • 205lb clean and jerks x 5 reps = 1,025lbs.
  • TOTAL: 5,440

NOW FOR THE COMPARISON

For the men 20.3 was 13,800 lbs. heavier in total volume than 20.4 and had a total of 30 more reps with the heavy barbell.

For the women 20.3 was 10,760 lbs. heavier in total volume than 20.4 and had a total of 30 more reps with the heavy barbell.

It turned out that 20.3 happened to be much heavier than 20.4 although more people may have been able to handle that weight better since it was a more simple movement such as deadlifts instead of clean and jerks.
