Before we get into the stats below…
This question became interesting when former Crossfit Games athlete and current Crossfit affiliate owner Graham Holmberg emailed his members to let them know that they would no longer be allowed to workout shirtless and women would no longer be allowed to wear “booty shorts”.
The reasoning behind this was:
“Please consider the movements we do during CrossFit classes (deadlift, toes to bar, handstand push ups) and how these movements reveal certain areas of the body to others in the class. Our mission is to create an environment where we can display our fitness and success, but allows every member to feel comfortable in their CrossFit journey.”

The Shirtless Champs
We decided to look at the number of times Rich Froning and Mat Fraser posted a shirtless photo in their last 50 instagram posts.
In the last 50 posted pictures on Instagram @richfroning has posted 30 shirtless photos while @mathewfras was close behind with 28. Both champs have been shirtless over 50% of the time and cumulatively they have been shirtless 58% of the time over the last 50 pictures.
Also Froning’s last 13 pictures in a row have been shirtless.
These numbers are well among the average compared to both the professional and recreational CrossFit athlete.
Don’t Forget The Ladies
We also looked at how many times two of the top Crossfit Games females posted a technically shirtless (sports bra only) instagram post.
Katrin Davidsdottir was rocking a sports bra only in 23 of her last 50 posts – 46%.
Brooke Wells came in with the highest percentage, wearing only a sports bra in 41 of her last 50 posts – 82%.
Cumulatively they post shirtless 64% of the time.
