This was an event that basically no one saw coming and with not having spent any time practicing this distance on a row before, these athlete’s times are pretty respectable.
If you were curious about just how far off the Crossfit Games athletes were from a world record time in the Marathon Row event, below is the data.
LUKAS ESSLINGER (winner of Marathon row event)
– TIME: 2:43:50 –
BEN DE WIT (2017 indoor rowing marathon world record holder)
– TIME: 2:21:08 –
MARGUAX ALVAREZ (winner of Marathon row event)
– TIME: 3:00:42 –
ERIN-MONIQUE O’BRIEN (2017 indoor rowing marathon world record holder)
– TIME: 2:47:18 –
Although the Crossfit Games athletes were beat by a fairly substantial margin when it comes to rowing times, keep in mind that this event was held after the athletes had already completed 3 previous events that day that included cycling, gymnastics, and weight lifting.
They also never practiced this event before and were not aware that they would be doing it until hours before.
*Indoor rowing marathon world record times were recorded from the Concept2.com database and both record holders were considered heavy weight rowers – over 160lbs for men, over 130lbs for women.
