Now that Mat Fraser has officially announced his retirement from competition and all of his stats are now final, we can take a look at how his numbers compare to one of the other greatest Crossfit athletes of all time, Rich Froning.
Since Fraser won his 2nd Crossfit Games in a row, people in the sport started to wonder if he could become better than Froning, which at the time was the only male athlete with 4 Crossfit Games titles.
When he went on to win his 3rd, and then his 4th in a row by extreme margins the community became conflicted on who truly was the greatest.
Even as Fraser won his 5th straight title, doing so by 545pts. and becoming the only athlete ever to win 5 Crossfit Games titles, the answer on who is best is still not concrete.
There are a few reasons why…
The only time the two competed head-to-head at the Games was in 2014 which happened to be Froning’s last year of individual competition and Fraser’s first.
Froning ended up winning by just 50pts.
So the question became – If Froning had competed against Fraser from 2015-2020 who would have come out with more victories?
And although it may seem easy to grant Fraser the title of best male athlete of all time with 5x victories, we still have to take into account Froning’s team performances.
Froning has 8 Crossfit Games wins (4 individual, 4 team) and each year he has won, his team Crossfit Mayhem has had different members.

However, when Froning won his titles he often did so by not many points whereas Fraser dominated.
