This is Crossfit’s Fittest Vegan

Crossfit’s fittest vegan is none other than the 2018 Open national champion of the Netherlands – 25 year old Jeremy Reijnders from Crossfit Vondelgym.

Reijnders has been following the vegan diet since 2015, which was also the first year he began doing Crossfit, following years of Judo training.

Most of the Crossfit world follows a pretty healthy diet, especially when it comes to Games level athletes but no one at the top is a vegan so what got Reijnders to give up meat for plants?

“It was a movie called “Forks Over Knives,” which argues that “most, if not all, of the so-called ‘diseases of affluence’ that afflict us, can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.” Reijnders was so convinced that, despite “really, really liking meat,” he decided to transition over the course of four weeks. And he hasn’t turned back since.”

As of this writing (week 4 of the 2020 Crossfit Open) Jeremy Reijnders is sitting in 954th worldwide and 4th in the Netherlands.

Some of his improvements are due to the fact that he was a new Crossfitter in 2015 and so was going to improve year over year no matter what, however his improvements were always significant, at over 56% each year.

He also had a solid strength and endurance background following years of Judo training which lead to his early success.

Reijnders does claim that his vegan diet has a lot to do with it as well. He stated to Men’s Journal that he immediately felt an increase in energy, a clearer head, and faster recovery times.

He also added in a sixth training day to his weekly program after only 6 weeks of his plant-based diet.

If you would like to learn more about the plant-based diet and why some athletes are going entirely plant-based there is a documentary titled “The Gamechangers” currently streaming on Netflix.

We neither recommend or would advise against an entirely plant-based diet. This post is only focused on looking at the fittest vegan in Crossfit.
