Fourteen of the fifteen inaugural Sanctionals of the 2019 Crossfit Games season have concluded and now is a good time to look at some of the results and see what trends have emerged. (French Throwdown starts June 28th).
Since Regionals were substituted for Sanctionals we have been given a little bit of a foreshadowing into who may be standing on top of the podium when it comes to the 2019 Games.
Usually at Regionals we could obviously see who is doing well and who is not, but there were two factors that were missing for a solid Games prediction:
- Athletes competed against a limited range of competitors. The US Regionals competed against a handful of states, and the European Regionals competed against a handful of countries. Now that Sanctionals are here athletes are fighting against global competition year-round.
- Sanctionals have a lot more variety in their events, and the programming more closely resembles the Crossfit Games.
In Crossfit Games history the men’s side of the podium is typically dominated by the United States while the women’s side is most often stacked with Europeans.

If we diagnose the results from above we can see that on the men’s side the United States still runs the table when it comes to podium finishes with the nearest competitors (Australia and Canada) far behind.
On the women’s side things are a lot more interesting, as usual. The USA had 13 podium finishes but Iceland with a massive difference in population had only 5 less podiums at 8.
With the 2019 Crossfit Games coming up in about a month and a half (41 days) we will see if these same countries stand on top.
