Jourdan Delacruz 2023 world weightlifting championships

USA Weightlifter Jourdan Delacruz Wins Bronze at 2023 World Weightlifting Championships

25 year old USA Weightlifter Jourdan Delacruz just finished 3rd place overall at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships in the 49kg category with a 88kg snatch and a 112 clean and jerk for a total of 200kg.

In fact, she was only 1 of 3 total women in her category to have a total of 200kg or more.

The Fight For 3rd Place

In a hard fought battle between Jourdan Delacruz, Mihaela Cambei, Zhihui Hou, and Huihua Jiang, Delacruz finished 4th in the snatch, behind Cambei and had to make up 2kg in order to pass Cambei for the overall 3rd place position.

Snatch

Delacruz missed her opening snatch attempt at 85kg, while Mihaela Cambei made her opener at 90kg.

With 5kg to make up already and no lift on the board, Delacruz had to execute her next 2 lifts if she wanted a chance at a medal.

Fortunately she made her 2nd attempt at 85kg as well as her 3rd attempt at 88kg, while Cambei missed her 2nd and 3rd attempt at 94kg.

Since both Hou and Jiang made their final snatches at 95kg, and Cambei hit 90kg, Delacruz took 4th place in the snatch.

Clean and Jerk

Once again in the competition Jourdan missed her opening lift, this time at 107kg.

After that she ended up hitting her 2nd attempt at 108kg and then making a massive jump to 112kg which gave her both the 3rd place in the clean and jerk, as well as the 3rd place overall in the total (200kg).

Cambei had multiple chances to overtake Delacruz, but unfortunately missed both her 2nd and her 3rd clean and jerk attempts at 108kg.

Summary

There are only 3 more opportunities to qualify for one of the top 10 spots at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, so athletes near the cut line are in a do or die position, but Jourdan Delacruz has put herself into a comfortable spot unless her country rival Hayley Reichardt can put up a bigger total than her by then.
