5 Interesting and Secret Facts About 5x CrossFit Champion Mat Fraser

Since most of us already know about Mat Fraser’s dominance in the sport, this post will not be referring to any of Mat Fraser’s stats that throughout his career in CrossFit, but instead we will focus on sharing some interesting facts about the champ that you probably have never heard before.

Let’s dive right in.

1) Mat Fraser is deaf in his left ear

Due to childhood ear infections Mat Fraser is partially deaf in his left ear and his right ear doesn’t have 100% hearing as well.

On a podcast in 2021 Fraser explained how hard it is for him to hear judges at competitions unless they yell at him.

Here’s some of his own words from the podcast:

“Left ear is a lost cause and the right ear isn’t great either. If there is any background noise while someone is speaking to me, I can’t hear a thing.”

2) He competed in the CrossFit Grid League in 2014

In 2014 Mat Fraser was on a team called the “New York Rhinos” which was a team that was a part of the now defunct National Pro Grid League.

Grid leagues are teams of CrossFit athletes that compete against other teams around the nation, similar to the team competition at the CrossFit Games, but with different rules, event styles, and scoring.

3) He graduated with degrees in Engineering and Business

Before he started CrossFit and even throughout his beginning in the sport, Mat Fraser attended the University of Vermont where he completed a double major course in mechanical engineering and engineering management and a double minor in math and business.

4) Mat Fraser was born and raised in Canada

Although Fraser competed all of his life under the American flag, he was actually born and raised in Ontario, Canada where he lived until his family moved to Vermont.

5) He has six screws and two plates attached to his lower spine

After breaking his back in a series of injuries in his youth, Mat Fraser underwent an experimental surgery that required his back to be re-broken while a protein sponge was inserted along with 2 plates and six screws to help heal and protect the bone.

The injury happened to be 2 breaks in his L5 vertebra.
